Automatic barriers and European safety standards (EN 12453 and EN 12604)

2026-06-16 · Baroxon

In the European Union an automatic barrier installation must comply with EN 12453 on the safety in use of power-operated doors and gates and EN 12604 on mechanical requirements.

What EN 12453 requires

The standard limits impact force, demands detection of people or vehicles in the movement zone and requires that movement cannot restart while the zone is occupied. In practice this means photocells, a loop detector or radar, and an automatic reverse system.

What EN 12604 requires

This covers mechanical requirements: structural strength of the boom, anchoring, protection against crushing and manual release for emergency use or power failure.

What an installation must include

Photocells on both sides of the lane, a loop detector or radar, visual or audible warning during movement, accessible manual release and, on high-speed barriers, additional anti-collision protection.

Baroxon barriers include these devices as standard or as an option, with technical documentation and ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification.
